Internship Programs

The Women’s Therapy Center was founded on the principle that the psychotherapy of women, by women, is deeply relational; that the teaching of psychotherapy is also relational; and that the doing, teaching and learning of this type of therapy takes place in a social context informed by principles of social justice. Our integrated curriculum for supervision and teaching reflects these values.

Two-Year Intensive Training Program

This training program is for pre- and post-degree MFT and LCSW interns, pre- and post-degree doctoral interns, and licensed therapists who want specialized training in psychodynamic, relational treatment for women. Our students are an integral part of the WTC community and participate in bi-annual Saturday retreats and agency committees. WTC offers a cohesive training program that includes:

  • weekly individual supervision from members of the faculty
  • 8-12 clinical hours
  • thematically-oriented case conferences
  • professional development group
  • a two-year didactic curriculum, focused on theory and technique of psychodynamic relational therapy within a social and cultural context

The curriculum is organized around the ideals that inform relational psychotherapy, respect for diverse cultures, and principles of social justice.

Participation in WTC’s Two-Year Intensive Training Program requires approximately 15 - 20 hours per week. All seminars and administrative meetings take place on Wednesdays, between 9:00 and 4:00 p.m. Accordingly, this time must be reserved. At the Women's Therapy Center, we believe that personal psychotherapy is a critical component of training. As a result, students must be in their own personal depth psychotherapy during the course of this program or have extensive personal depth psychotherapy experience.

The Two-Year Intensive Training Program runs from the beginning of September through the end of August. There is no tuition. There are no stipends. An informational meeting is held at our office at the end of January with applications due in late February. Attendance at this meeting is strongly encouraged as it provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the training program as well as a chance to meet some students and faculty.

There are 8 internship positions available in the first year with the expectation that these students will continue and complete the second year of training.

WTC has a rolling admission policy - this means as long as we have openings, we will continue to accept applications. However, in order to be offered a first round interview slot, we must have your application packet (containing an original and 3 copies) no later than Friday, February 29th, 2008 at 3pm. The first round of interviews will be held on Friday - Sunday, March 28th, 29th and 30th, 2008.

For more details and/or to obtain an application, please call the administrative office at 510-524-4822, ext. 2. Or, for your convenience, you may download the application in PDF format below.

Advanced Training Program (ATP)

The third year Advanced Training Program offers students specialized training focusing on therapy with couples and adolescent girls, as well as experience working with individuals, and professional development guidance for transitioning into private practice. Students continue to receive substantive supervision, both individually and in case conferences. You do not need to be a graduate of our two-year internship to enroll in our Advanced Training Program.

The Advanced Training Program is appropriate for licensed and unlicensed clinicians who have had a minimum of three years of clinical practice and in-depth training. Students will receive intensive supervision, experience working with individuals, couples, and adolescent girls, and didactic training on working with couples and adolescents. Students in ATP receive support and training in marketing and professional development.

Students generally leave the ATP program with caseloads of 8-10 weekly client hours that they can take to move into private practice. Students graduating from ATP have said that they feel well-prepared to enter into independent practice, armed with a solid base in both individual and couples therapy and with good practical knowledge of legal, ethical, financial, and marketing issues necessary for licensed practice.

The Advanced Training Program runs from the beginning of September through the end of August. Students in the ATP program must be available for group supervision, classes and meetings on Wednesdays, from 9am to 1:30pm. Additionally, individual supervision will be arranged outside of these hours. Stipends are available
