Transgender

The Women's Therapy Center was founded over thirty years ago out of a recognition that rigid notions and expectations of gender are psychologically unhealthy.

We welcome people with unconventional expressions of gender that don't fit neatly into traditional ideas of male and female. This includes people who identify as transgender, transsexual, gender-queer, or butch/femme, or intersex. We understand that some people may come to therapy to talk specifically about issues directly related to being trans/gender-queer such as: the experience of not feeling comfortable in the biologically gendered body you were born into and grown up with, coming out to yourself or others, whether to transition or not, psychological aspects of transitioning, or living in a trans-phobic world; while other people will come in to talk about issues having nothing to do with being trans but want to feel sure you won't be pathologized. Our Agency Therapists are trained to view gender as existing on a continuum and many enter our program with comfort and familiarity with the trans and gender-queer communities.
