What is Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is an interpersonal relationship in which you and your therapist talk and think together about whatever is causing you emotional or psychological distress in your day to day life. This may include not liking or feeling good about yourself; difficulties in relationships with others; feelings of loneliness, alienation or marginalization; childhood or recent traumas or losses; self-defeating behaviors; or chronic anxiety or depression.

Generally psychotherapy will focus on understanding your current life difficulties in the context of your past and present experiences in your family as well as the larger world including social-cultural forces such as sexism, racism and other forms of oppression. Psychotherapy works through the co-creation of an open and trusting relationship between you and your therapist in which you can come to understand yourself more deeply in order to feel more alive and empowered to live your life the way you want to. This takes time and a commitment of weekly sessions as human beings are unique and complex.
